Permanent residents with an expired Green Card will be able to apply for citizenship.

The measure is a response to the delays faced by the Immigration Agency, which has almost 9 million pending cases.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced on Friday (9) that it will automatically extend the validity of Green Cards for permanent residents who apply for citizenship and have the document expired during the waiting period. The rule came into effect from this Monday (12) and is a response to the delays faced by the agency, which accumulates almost 9 million pending cases. Among them, 666,473 N-400 forms (Application for Naturalization or US Citizenship).

According to the USCIS, a printed notice confirming the extension of the validity of the Green Cards will be sent to the address of the applicant.

Residents who filed for naturalization before Monday will not be included in the rule. In this case, they must still complete Form I-90 or receive an ADIT stamp in their passport in order to maintain valid evidence of legal status in the country and not become deportable.

The waiting time for a citizenship process originally took around 180 days (six months). However, since 2016, this period has tripled, going from two years in some locations.
